9/17/18:  Football Game & Rehearsal Dates flipped

PREVIOUS SCHEDULE:

  • 9/21/18 Stone Bridge has changed their mind and will not allow us to march our show this coming Friday.
  • 10/12/18 we have a rehearsal scheduled.

However we have decided to flip the away game and rehearsal because they are both dates you have already committed to marching band.

UPDATED SCHEDULE:

  • 9/21/18 will now be a rehearsal 4:15-7:30
  • 10/12/18 will be an away game to Briar Woods. Briar Woods has confirmed that we can perform our show postgame. This will be a better experience for us and allow us more rehearsal time before our first competition.

9/11/18:  Football game update due to weather: event rescheduled

The football game scheduled on 9/14 has been moved to Thursday 9/13 so that it can be played before the hurricane. The timeline for the football game will remain the same:

4:10-5:00pm … Rehearse
5:15- 5:45pm … Eat pizza
6:15pm … Warm up
6:40Ppm … Take the Field
6:45pm … National Anthem

Wear – Show Shirts and Shorts – try to wear dark colored tennis shoes or marching shoes.

Please try and coordinate your schedule so that you can be there. If there is an un-resolvable conflict please fill out this form by 11:00PM TONIGHT

If there is bad weather Thursday we will make a decision and let you know by 2:30PM on Thursday 9/13 of any change in plans.

9/10/18:  UVA update due to weather: event rescheduled

Dear Marching Band Families,

Due to the weather and forecast hurricane next weekend UVA is moving our combined halftime performance to Nov 10th. More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Please hold all questions until further notice as you have all the information that we currently have. We will be in touch with updates regarding tickets, schedule, and other information. Students, please add the Nov 10th performance to your calendar.

8/29/2018: Money Earning

Money earning events to offset costs for Disney, Band Fees for 2019-20 marching season, and Competitions for individual students.

TAG Day:  September 8th JCHS Band students, with marching band and guard students, dressed in their band or guard uniforms, walk door-to-door in their neighborhoods handing out flyers with information about the band and tags with the concert schedule for the band while asking for contributions.  MORE DETAILS HERE >> and sign up and be a driver here >>

Mattress Sales: October 13th there will be a mattress sale to support the band so please keep this in mind if you need new mattresses, pillows, comforters or sheets.  Have customers mention your child’ name to receive credit towards their student account. SEE DETAILS HERE >>

Wreath Sales: Students can raise funds for trips, band fees for 2019-20 marching season, and competitions for individual students, by selling premium quality Christmas Wreaths and Evergreens from Alpine Farms.  MORE DETAILS HERE >> Details coming soon.


8/18/2018: Disney

We will leave December 17 after school and return by December 22.

The students will only miss 3 days of school; one of which is the day before break where many students miss and minimal new instruction occurs. Teachers and coaches will be aware of the trip. Students will have the break to finish any work they may miss. This trip is open to Willard 9th grade band students and John Champe band students.

You can turn in your signup sheet and deposit to your band director at Champe or Willard. We will host an optional trip meeting on August 27th at 7:00PM in the John Champe Auditorium. We will talk through the itinerary, collect deposits, and answer any questions you may have.

If you are interested in going and are on free and reduced lunch or finances are an issue please reach out to Mr. Phillip, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Phillip, or Mr. Miles.

We will have at least two fundraisers to help offset the cost for students who participate. More information on fundraising will come out shortly.

The cost of the trip will be $850​.  Please return the commitment form and the $425 deposit by August 27th.  Checks made payable to J​ohn Champe High School​.


8/9/2018: Change in time for FRIDAY! Spirit Wear

  • Friday 8/10/2018: times are changing slightly
    • 7:00AM – Be at Champe!
    • We are starting the DCI Viewing Party at 7:00PM instead of 6:00PM. Remember we are ending rehearsal at 4:00PM to allow students go home, eat, and shower. We will share snacks that people bring!
  • 2018 Spirit wear is available!!!
    • There is something for students and band parents. Don’t go out there looking all 2017!

8/7/2018:  Band Parent Meeting Recap

  1. MATTRESS SALE: October 13th there will be a mattress sale to support the band so please keep this in mind if you need new mattresses, pillows, comforters or sheets.  SEE FLYER HERE >
  2. UVA GAME: September 15th Champe will perform at the UVA game. The band will perform along with several other Virginia HS bands. The band will spend the day at UVA to practice the drill and perform, both during the game and at halftime. If you would like to buy tickets to the game, the cheapest way is through Champe band ($20 through band vs $35/$40 online). Sign up on for tickets and provide name, email and number of tickets desired along with a check to JCHS by 8/24/2018:  PURCHASE TICKETS HERE >
  3. VOLUNTEERS: Soon Charms will have sign ups for football games and competitions volunteer positions. Initially people will be limited to signing up for two games/events at first to encourage more people to sign up though some key personnel may participate in more (such as equipment driver). If slots are still free announcements will be made. The slot limits do not apply to events such as tag day and DCI night, so please sign up for these as well since we really need your help!!!  VOLUNTEER HERE >
  4. WATER NEEDED: With the large number of students and need to stay hydrated, each guard member needs to provide one case of water for use by the band. Due to limited space, sections will be scheduled to bring in water for specific months. August is Baritones, Clarinets, and Saxophones.
  5. DISNEY: The band is planning to go to Disney right before winter break. The trip will be 4 days 3 nights and be a great opportunity for the kids. The students will leave on Monday after school miss 3 days school before break leave Disney Friday night come back Saturday.
    • Cost student $850 and chaperone $425
    • Parents are encouraged to volunteer. For this event chaperones will be selected based on factors such as familiarity with students (since will be monitoring and interacting with them for several days), desired skills such as medical, and seniority (parent of upperclassmen as this may be their last trip) more info to come.

8/6/2018:  UVA Ticket order form

Parents:  Sign up to purchase tickets if you would like to watch the football game on September 15th to watch the game and the students perform.   Please submit payment before August 24th.  PURCHASE TICKETS HERE >

Please print your confirmation page and bring in a check made out to JCHS and give to Mr. Phillip. Your tickets aren’t confirmed until we receive a check. Tickets are $20 and are in section 113, 115 (is overflow).

Sign-up’s for Marching Band is officially open for 2018 year.  Please visit this link to SIGN UP today!

Marching band is a co-curricular activity. In order to be a member of the marching band, it is required to be enrolled in an instrumental music class during the school year. (Exceptions are made for members of the Color Guard.) Band and Color Guard members will be working together to realize personal growth through the exploration of musical expression.

Our 2018 show is titled Sounds of Silence and features the music of Beethoven
