Directors

Welcome to the John Champe Band … Meet our wonderful band directors

Mr Phillip

Mr Phillip has the honor of working with the wonderful band students at John Champe High School.  Mr. Phillip is a graduate of James Madison University and holds a masters degree from George Mason University. He is also certified to be a K-12 Administrator through The George Washington University.  He studied tuba with Mark Theile and Kevin Stees. The band program at Champe has enjoyed much success because of the hard work of the students.  With an inaugural marching band of 24 members, the marching band has grown to 150 members in four years.  The students have earned superior ratings in marching band, concert band, and have been named a Virginia Honor Band for three years. The concert program has grown to include three concert bands, jazz band, and percussion ensembles.  The program also offers more opportunity for musical growth with indoor color guard, indoor drumline, various small ensembles, and a thriving private lesson program.  Mr. Phillip is the assistant conductor of the Northern Virginia Youth Winds.  Mr. Phillip enjoys spending his free time with his Wife, Laurel Phillip, and their pets Shirley and Tink.

Mr Carr

Mr Carr is in his fourth year of teaching at John Champe High School.  He earned a Bachleor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Music from James Madison University.  Prior to coming to John Champe, Mr. Carr taught at Mercer Middle School (Aldie, VA), Cooper Middle School (McLean, VA) and was a freelance percussionist.  He has many published percussion works and continues to compose music for several marching bands around the state of virginia.  Mr. Carr is a member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), National Association for Music Educators (NAFME), and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).  Mr. Carr is excited to be working with the students of John Champe High School!
